We Made It To Graduation

This one is for all you vet students out there. Or even those that still suffer from PTVSS (Post-Traumatic Vet School Syndrome). When I think of vet school, I think “protest song”. I actually put the words down to this song to the tune of Barry Mcguire’s “Eve of Destruction” about a year after graduation. So, it’s been a long time a’comin’. But thanks to the amazing talents of Rick Barclay at Barclasion Music and the incomparable Paul Needles, we’re finally able to bring you a finished version. The initial idea for this song came at graduation when I heard so many people who I felt had it more together and more competence than me, lamenting, “I can’t believe we made it to graduation!” It was eye-opening and a little heart-breaking to hear the doubt and insecurity in everyone and made me realize we all had our personal struggles getting through. While I’m hoping vet school has become a better place for those going through it now, I suspect it may not have changed that much. If it helps at all, look, if I could get through it, so can you.

Lyrics

My brain feels like it’s over-loadin’,
Synapses flarin’, capillaries explodin’,
We’ve read every book, answers knowin’,
We’ve worked up every case, information over-flowin’,
Even our pets have stress showin’,

And you tell me,
Over and over and over again,
You don’t believe we’ll make it to graduation.

Don’t they understand what we’re tryin’ to say,
Can’t they feel the fears we’ve been feelin’ these days,
How can we learn, when our minds have run away,
We can’t be good vets if we’re in a daze,
We’ve had to give so much, sometimes we have lost touch,

And you tell me,
Over and over and over again,
You don’t believe we’ll make it to graduation.

My blood’s so mad, feels like coagulatin’,
I’m sittin’ here, just contemplatin’,
I have to speak the truth,
It knows no regulation,
Don’t they know a vet is more than just examinations,
Adding to the schedule doesn’t help the situation,
When student respect is disintegratin’,
This whole education is just too frustratin’,

And you tell me,
Over and over and over again,
You don’t believe we’ll make it to graduation.

Look at your fellow students, they’re in the same boat,
Tryin’ to reach the shore, tryin’ to stay afloat,
You can leave school for summer break,
But when you return it’s the same old place,
Just try to catch your breath in this academic rat race,
Things can always change, gotta state your case,
Just remember who you are and set. your. own. pace.

And you’ll tell me,
Over and over and over and over again, my friend,
You can’t believe we made it to graduation,
No, no, you can’t believe we made it to graduation.
